Confirmation for CIC nominees hearing set for April 5 - Washington DC Re-Entry On Thursday, April 5, 2012, in the Wilson Building (Room 120), the DC Council will hold a hearing that will include the confirmation of the three nominees to the Corrections Information Council (CIC),and on Friday April 20, 2012, the city council will also deal with the CIC's budget. The CIC nominees are: Rev. Samuel Whittaker, Michelle Bonner, and Katharine Huffman. When asked about the importance of the CIC to the District,D.C. Re-Entry Task Force Co-Chair Louise White said, "The CIC is the only DC unit with the task of monitoring the confinement SITOUFFICIALE MONCLER of DC prisoners in the DC Jail and the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) with its 6,000 DC prisoners scattered across the states. In the DC Revitalization Act of 1997,the US Congress stated that the CIC was to ensure that BOP practices met legal standards, and in 2003 the DC City Council expanded the jurisdiction of the CIC to include the DC Jail Moncler Outlet and GUCCI OUTLET the CTF."The CIC is Louis Vuitton USA the only body with the statutory authority to provide and confirm statistical data about these units, as well as individual matters such as security, medical treatment and grievances. As such it "represents the District's Burberry Outlet interest in the well being of its prisoners..." To cite just one example of the lack of information, one lawyer noted that'when a prisoner is murdered while held in the BOP, their families have no way to secure information about the death. They have no access to investigative reports and, indeed, are often not notified officially by the institution.'"Also, the question Gucci Outlet was raised concerning whether or Coach Outlet not the CIC wold regulate the DC Jail and/or Hope Village, a well-known halfway house located in southeast D.C. White replied, "Regulate would not be the correct word. The CIC powers would depend on Coach Outlet their access to information and their authority to issue regular reports to the BOP, the Mayor, the Council, and the DOC. Any regulation would have to come from those bodies. In so far as halfway houses are under the BOP, the CIC technically could review them also."For those who are interested in testifying, please contact DC Committee on the Judiciary Legislative Counsel Christina Setlow at 202-724-4865.Additionally, the D.C. Re-Entry Task Force will meet on April 12, to discuss the confirmation hearing.
